Metal Embossing Basics

What is metal embossing? A little history on metal embossing to get a better understanding. Metal embossing is also known as pewter art or work (British) repoussé (French), repujado, or repujado en lamina (Spanish). In Northern America, it is mainly referred to as metal embossing or occasionally as metal tooling.
Metal embossing can be traced back to as far as Ancient Egypt. The mummy mask of Tutankhamun, a Pharaoh of the late Eighteenth Dynasty, was formed using metal embossing or repoussé. It is believed it was embossed on a single sheet of gold. The Greeks, in 400 BC was also said to be using repoussé for their bronze armour plates. They were using beeswax as a filler. Today, we are still using beeswax as fillers. Copper and silver sheets and repoussé are commonly used in India to create vessels.
So, what is metal embossing today? Modern-day metal embossing uses a variety of metal embossing techniques and handheld tools to shape the malleable sheets of metal, such as pewter, copper, or aluminum, to name a few.
